Detroit, Mich. - For the second year in a row, Titans golfer Mark Sommerfeld is on his way to the US Amateur Championship. To get there this time, Sommerfeld won the local qualifier held Tuesday at Webster (NY) Golf Club.

The 107th US Amateur will be held at the Olympic Club - site of two previous Amateurs as well as four US Opens - in San Francisco. The 2007 US Amateur field will play 18 holes each at the Olympic Club's Lake and Ocean Courses on Aug. 20-21. The top 64 qualifiers will advance to match play one day later, with the national champion decided on Aug. 26. The US Amateur is the USGA's oldest event.

The two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, Sommerfeld (Waterloo, ON/Bluevale) won his 36-hole qualifier in suburban Rochester, NY with a two-under-par total of 142 after rounds of 70 and 72. That gave him a one-shot edge over Dominic Bozzelli and two over John Moon as all three golfers moved on to the national tournament.

Sommerfeld - who missed match play at last year's championship by just two strokes - is the third Titan to qualify for the US Amateur over the eight years. He follows Kyler Murphy (2005) and Adam Walicki (1999 and 2002).

The US Amateur will be one of two national competitions for Sommerfeld this summer. Along with teammate David Byrne, he'll also compete at the Canadian Amateur Championship, Aug. 12-17 in Saskatoon, SK. It will be Sommerfeld's fourth straight appearance in the Canadian Am, and he reached the Round of 32 in match play the last two summers.

Sommerfeld will join Cleveland State's Jake Scott at the event.
