CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago men's golfer Armando Favela (Tijuana, Mexico/St. Augustine) continues to shine on the national scene as he recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held in Pinehurst, N.C., Aug. 18-24. Earlier this summer, the senior-to-be captured first place in the independent men's division at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship.

To qualify for the U.S. Amateur, the left-hander won a playoff by recording a birdie to win a two-hole playoff and finish as one of the top three competitors at the sectional qualifying tournament at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, Calif., on July 31. The Tijuana, Mexico native birdied his final two holes of regulation to force the playoff and finish with a 36-hole score of 142 (69-73).

Favela will be one of 312 amateurs to participate in the U.S. Amateur, Aug. 18-24, on the renowned No. 2 and No. 4 Courses at Pinehurst Resort, site of the 1994 U.S. Senior Open and both the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Opens.

Following two days of practice rounds, 36 holes of stroke play starts on Aug. 18. The top 64 qualifiers advance to match play which begins on Aug. 20.

In 2007-08, Favela earned All-Horizon League honors while leading the Ramblers with a 75.3 average in 30 rounds. He placed tied for sixth at the Horizon League Championship with a 54-hole score of 223 (76-74-73).
