Finkenbrink, Dredge Share Men's Tennis Player of the Week Honors; Cleveland State's Bush Wins on Women's Side
INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay sophomore Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) and Wright State senior Brian Dredge (Urbana, Ohio) have been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, while Cleveland State freshman Alex Bush (Vienna, W.Va.) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week beginning Feb. 24.
Finkenbrink led Green Bay to a 2-1 mark last week, breezing past IPFW, 7-0, and Eastern Illinois, 6-1, and falling at Purdue, 6-1. Playing at No. 1 singles in all three matches, the sophomore compiled a 2-1 record and went 2-1 in doubles play.
At IPFW, the German rallied for a 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while picking up a key 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles to help the Phoenix earn the early point. While Finkenbrink fell at No. 1 the following day versus Purdue, he teamed with Josh Oothoudt to help Green Bay pick up an 8-7(5) win at No. 2 doubles. The sophomore wrapped up his weekend with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 rout at No. 1 singles.
While Wright State dropped a 6-1 contest at #3 Ohio State in its lone match of the week, Dredge picked up the singles point for the Raiders, rallying for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory at No. 5 singles.
Bush went 2-0 in doubles action and 1-1 at No. 5 singles on the week. Playing at No. 2 in both doubles matches, Bush and Alex Power persevered for a 9-8(4) victory versus Toledo on Friday before the freshman teamed with Mengdi Liu to breeze past their competition from Western Michigan, 8-4. Against the Broncos, Bush won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-6.
Green Bay will be back in action on Friday, March 4, heading to Wisconsin before opening the Horizon League season on Saturday, March 5, at UIC. Wright State’s lone match of the week comes on Sunday, March 6, at Indiana. Cleveland State will play a doubleheader on Sunday, taking on Akron in the morning before meeting Oakland that evening.
