INDIANAPOLIS – Horizon League teams tallied five wins on Sunday in the last full slate of non-conference matches before League play begins next week.
Loyola 1, Bowling Green 0
Loyola extended its unbeaten streak to four matches, winning at Bowling Green, 1-0, on Sunday.
Loyola (4-4-1) got the lone goal of the match in the 17th minute, when Brielle Haupt converted off a feed from Tessa Daniels. The goal was the first of the year for Haupt. Haupt posted a hard shot between the posts after receiving a long ball from Daniels.
After the intermission, Loyola was kept on its heels, steadfastly defending the goal. Keeper Monica Gonyo had seven saves, proving to be the deciding factor in the match.
Bowling Green produced several chances up top in the second half, including three shots in the last 10 minutes.
Cleveland State 3, Longwood 1
After Longwood tied the match, Cleveland State scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-1 victory over Longwood at Krenzler Field.
Cleveland State (3-5-0) jumped on the board early, using an Erin O’Toole goal just 9:25 into the match to take a 1-0 lead. O'Toole knocked in a loose ball in front of the goal off a corner kick from Havas.
Longwood would tie the contest at 1-1 in the 57th minute, but the Vikings came right back 10 minutes later as Chloe Fadenholz gathered a loose ball about 20 yards out and sent a shot into the upper right corner of the goal that gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings added an insurance tally with just under 10 minutes to play in the contest to provide the final margin. Frederike Dubeau started the play when she cleared a ball past midfield to Taylor Vidovic who took a few touches and played a through ball to Havas. Havas was able to gather it and beat her defender into the box, getting shot on frame that beat Longwood's Shelby Hall.
Detroit 2, IUPUI 0
Controlling the match throughout, Detroit posted a 2-0 victory over visiting IUPUI at Titans Field.
Detroit (3-4-1) opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a Haley Burtraw goal, her third of the year.
Burtraw made a move at the top of the 18-yard box and cleared enough room to take a shot that sailed high and hard over the goalkeeper and into the upper left corner.
The pressure continued to come from the Titans against IUPUI, resulting in a penalty kick at the 62:28 mark that gave Detroit its second goal of the game. Nina Carter sent a ball to Kaitlyn Quarrell, who was taken down inside the 18 on a clear path to the net. Dornbos made no mistake converting on the penalty kick for her second goal of the season.
Detroit applied constant pressure throughout the game holding a 7-2 shooting advantage in the first half and an 8-2 advantage in the second for a 15-4 overall total.
Nora Abolins had to make just one save to pick up the shutout.
Wright State 2, Morehead State 0
Freshmen led the way for Wright State against visiting Morehead State, as the Raiders controlled the match in a 2-0 victory at Alumni Field.
Wright State (4-2-3) outshot Morehead State, 14-6, putting eight shots on goal to the Eagles’ two.
Kalee Thompson put the Raiders in front 33:44 into the match, taking a cross in front from Amy Anderson and beating the Morehead State keeper. The goal was the first of Thompson’ career.
With Wright State holding the one-goal lead, Ini Umotong sealed the result, posted her third goal of the year in the 89th minute. Anderson was again credited with the goal after Umotong’s header.
Brooke McCurdy recorded two saves to pick up the shutout.
Valparaiso 1, IPFW 0 (ot)
Two minutes into overtime, Rita Craven’s first goal of the year sent Valparaiso to a 1-0 victory over in-state foe IPFW.
Valparaiso (5-2-1) dominated the run of play, with the Crusaders taking 17 shots, putting nine on frame. The host Mastodons had just three of their eight shots on goal. Valpo had seven corner kicks to IPFW’s one, but had to wait until the 1:36 mark of overtime before finding the game-winner.
Rachel Hoaglin assisted on Craven’s goal, sending a pass to the left side, where Craven beat the keepr to the far post.
Kristen Manski picked up her fifth shutout of the year and third straight.
Northern Kentucky 2, Youngstown State 1
Shay Sade scored her first career goal, but the Youngstown State women's soccer team dropped its third straight match after falling to Northern Kentucky, 2-1, at Stambaugh Stadium.
Youngstown State (4-3-0) took 22 shots and nine shots on goal compared to just six total shots and two shots on goal for Northern Kentucky.
After the Norse took a 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into the match, Sade knotted the game when a shot by Chelsey Haney rebounded to her and she found the back of the goal at the 23:14 mark.
NKU's Sarah Smith scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute mark after Martha Staab's pass found a crease in the Penguins's defense and slipped a shot past Ali Viola.
Iowa State 2, Milwaukee 1
Milwaukee conceded a goal in each half and could not overcome the deficit in falling to Iowa State, 2-1, at ISU Soccer Complex.
Milwaukee (1-5-1) dropped its fifth-straight game despite holding the momentum and the play throughout much of the contest. Iowa State was buoyed by the second goal and was able to hold off the Panthers.
The Panthers dodged the shutout with just four seconds remaining, when Kelly Lewers finished off a header from Kriss Dorre. The play started on a bounding ball towards the ISU box. Dorre beat the keeper with her header and Lewers followed the play, navigating a pair of defenders to finish into the empty goal.
Milwaukee was the better side for much of the first half, limiting the Cyclones to long shots for the majority of the contest, but Jennifer Dominguez put the hosts up 1-0 on a floating shot that snuck under the cross bar to put ISU ahead in the 14th minute.
A header came out of the midfield and caught Milwaukee keeper Jamie Forbes at an in between point, Kaeli Flaska tracked the ball, got around Forbes and finished on an empty net. The shot was ISU's first that was not within steps of outside the penalty area.
