Former YSU Women's Basketball Player Karen Flagg Signs to Play in the Netherlands
Former Youngstown State University women's basketball player Karen Flagg has signed a contract to play professionally in the Netherlands.
Flagg will play in the top Dutch league with Dozy BV Den Helder. The season will begin on Sept. 14, and Flagg is expected to travel to the Netherlands next week.
"We are very excited for Karen to be able to continue her basketball career at the professional level," Youngstown State head coach John Barnes said. "She has the athleticism to compete at an elite level on both ends of the floor. It's been an exciting summer for her with earning her degree from YSU and signing this contract. She has made the YSU community very proud."
Flagg's coach, Robert Tinga, said "Karen can play inside and outside. She can drive to the basket or step out and shoot a 3-pointer. With her speed and athletic ability, she gives us great flexibility on both offense and defense." Flagg's agent, Matthew C. Krejci of MK Spots and Entertainment LLC, said Den Helder will most likely use her as a small forward.
Flagg was a solid all-around performer in her two years as a Penguin after transferring from Daytona State College. Flagg started 57 games and posted career averages of 8.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.0 blocks. She had her best year as a senior when she scored 296 points to go along with 210 rebounds, 98 assists, 35 blocks and 29 steals. Flagg earned her bachelor's degree in sociology earlier this month.
Flagg becomes the second YSU women's basketball player in the last two years to continue playing at the professional level. Brandi Brown, who played one year with Flagg, just completed her second year of professional basketball. Brown recently concluded her season with Ipswich Force in Australia after playing with the Solna Vikings in Sweden last year.
Flagg is the fourth Penguins basketball player to sign a professional contract this summer. She joins Kamren Belin (Romania, Damian Eargle (Japan) and Kendrick Perry (Australia) from the men's program.
