The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and Allstate Insurance Company today Wednesday that four Horizon League men's basketball players were among the 158 nominees for the 2015 Allstate NABC Good Works Teams.
The players nominated from the Horizon League were Milwaukee's Matt Tiby, Oakland's Corey Petros, Valparaiso's Alec Peters and Wright State's Kendall Griffin.
Tiby started all 35 games for the Panthers last year as they won the Horizon League Tournament Championship. He ranked third on the team with 12.0 points per game and led the club with 6.5 rebounds per outing last season as a sophomore. Tiby registered six double doubles last year, a figure that ranked tied for third in the Horizon League.
Petros was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League first team after leading the conference last year with 8.2 rebounds per game. This season he leads the Horizon League in field goal percent at 69.2 (9th in the NCAA), and is second with 8.4 rebounds per game. Petros has three double-doubles this season, second in the conference, and 23 in his career which is fourth-best in Oakland history.
Peters was a member of the Horizon League All-Freshman Team last season after averaging 12.7 points per game, becoming the highest scoring Crusader freshman since 1998-99. This season, the sophomore – a preseason First Team All-League selection – has been even better, averaging a league-best 19.3 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. A two-time league Player of the Week choice by College Sports Madness, Peters was MVP of the Challenge in Music City and was a member of the All-Tournament Team at the Central Michigan Tournament.
Griffin, currently sidelined with an injury, has been involved with many causes through the years, including clinics, school readings and seminars as well as a team representative on WSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Avon, IN native also toured with Athletes in Action throughout Africa in 2013.
The prestigious community service award recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
College sports information directors and basketball coaches across the country nominated players who exhibit exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. From the 158 NABC nominees, distinguished voting panels will select a 10-member team comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team® will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, to the 2015 NABC Convention and 2015 NCAA Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis, where they will participate in a community project benefitting the host city.
