Four Softball Players Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four Horizon League softball players earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District honors, the organization announced on Thursday. Youngstown State’s Vicky Rumph, Sara Cupp of Detroit, UIC’s Coryn Schmit and Wright State’s Colleen Schneider all earned a place on the District 5 team and are now eligible for Academic All-America honors.

The Academic All-America program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Rumph, a junior catcher from Mount Forest, Ontario, is the owner of a 3.85 GPA in chemistry. She is currently hitting .369 with a team-high 35 RBIs and 28 runs scored. The junior has added 12 doubles, a triple and four home runs to post a .553 slugging percentage and a .422 on-base percentage. Rumph ranks sixth in the Horizon League in doubles and RBIs while also ranking eighth in batting average and ninth in both slugging and on-base percentage. Her 20 RBIs in YSU's 20 Horizon League games rank as the third-most during conference play.

Schneider, a junior first baseman from Centerville, OH, is hitting .292 with 18 RBIs and three home runs in 45 games and 113 at bats.  She is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.93 GPA.

Cupp is a nursing major holding a GPA of 3.91. She is one of four Titans who have started in all 49 games this season and currently leads the team in many offensive categories including average (.301), hits (41), RBI (33), home runs (9), walks (18) and total bases (72).

She is five RBI away from tying Detroit's single-season record of 38 that was set in 1990 with three games remaining in the 2012 season.

Schmit, who carries a flawless 4.0 grade-point-average as an honors student in UIC's Kinesiology program, has been named the athletic department's Female Student-Athlete of the Year in each of the past two years. She was one-of just two players on the District-5 team to post a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Schmit currently ranks sixth in the Horizon League in home runs (8), while sitting fifth overall in the League in RBI's, with 36 runs driven in. Entering this weekend's final homestand against Wright State, Schmit is hitting .305 - she leads the Flames in at-bats (151), runs scored (27), home runs, RBI and total bases (78). Schmit is also slugging .517 on the season.
