INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State freshman Kim Demmings and Loyola freshman Simone Law are the Horizon League Women’s Co-Basketball Players of the Week, for the period from Jan. 9-Jan. 15.
Demmings scored 38 points, the most by a Horizon League player this season, in Wright State’s comeback overtime win over Milwaukee, 78-75. The freshman guard scored 24 of her 38 points in the second half, including 10 in the final 1:58 of regulation. With the Raiders down three points late in the game, Demmings drove down the court and swished a three-pointer as the horn went off to force overtime. The 38 points are the fourth-most in Wright State women’s basketball history.
Wright State (12-6, 5-1) has only one game this week as the Raiders travel to Detroit to take on the Titans (8-10, 4-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
Law had two double-doubles, averaging 17.5 points and 10.0 rebounds, in Loyola’s two wins in Northeast Ohio last week. On Thursday, Law had 21 points, including 18 in the second half, and 10 rebounds in Loyola’s 82-77 win over Youngstown State. On Saturday against Cleveland State, Law had 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Ramblers raced out to a 49-21 halftime lead over the Vikings and cruised to an 85-67 victory.
The Ramblers were short-handed this weekend as their leading scorer Patrice King (14.6 points per game, 16.0 in conference games, heading into last week) sat only the final three halves of basketball as she only appeared in the first half of the YSU game.
Law has five double-doubles on the season, the most by a Loyola freshman since Tonya Crum had five in the 1997-98 season.
Loyola (8-9, 3-3) returns home this week to face Valparaiso (5-11, 1-4) on Thursday night with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET and Butler (6-10, 2-3) on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
