Top-seed UIC advanced into the second round of the winner's bracket with a 13-4 six-inning triumph over No. 8 Youngstown State on Thursday at a blustery cold Ashwaubenon Sports Complex in Green Bay, Wis.
The Flames took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Nicole Robinson solo shot and a Joyce Cathey two-run home run. After the Penguins closed the gap to 4-3 by the middle of the fourth inning, UIC tacked on four runs in the bottom half to extend its lead to 7-3. The Flames biggest inning came in the sixth when they put six runs on the board, including a two-run home run by Elizabeth Jacoby.
UIC's Brittany McIntyre struck-out three while scattering six hits in six innings of work from the circle.
