Junior Sara Zawacki (Dearborn, Mich. / Marian) scored both goals for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team on Wednesday, including the game-winner 1:21 into the second overtime period, to lift the Titans to a 2-1 victory over rival Oakland University. It was the first win for Detroit in the Metro Series rivalry between the two schools.
The Titans improved to 5-1 in the Horizon League with the comeback victory. With the win, Detroit clinched a spot in the upcoming Horizon League Championship. UDM also earned its fifth-straight victory, with three of them coming in overtime. Detroit remained undefeated at home this season (4-0-1), while the Titans haven't lost a match at Titan Field in their last 16 matches (15-0-1).
The game remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Oakland found the back of the net on a goal by Kyla Kellerman. Detroit tied the game 12 minutes later as Zawacki found a rebound in the box and fired a shot into the left side of the goal in the 80th minute.
Neither team could capitalize in the remaining minutes of regulation or in the first 10-minute overtime session. In the second overtime, it didn't take long for Detroit to find the back of the net. On a push down the field, junior Jennifer Borawski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) found Zawacki, who took the pass, dribbled to the left side of the box and fired a shot past Oakland goalkeeper Alison Holland into the right side of the goal.
The goals for Zawacki were her second and third of the season. She has scored all three of her goals this year in the past two games. It was also her first career multi-goal game.
Freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo (Washington Township, Mich. / Romeo) made seven saves in net for Detroit. Senior Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ont. / Father Leo J. Austin) and Zawacki each had three shots to lead the Titans, while Oakland's Alice Palmer had a game-high seven shots.
The Golden Grizzlies (4-10-2, 2-3-1 HL) had the advantage in shots (17-10) and corner kicks (5-2) during the match.
Green Bay 1, UIC 0
Controlling the match throughout the entire 90 minutes, the Green Bay women’s soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout victory on the road over UIC on Wednesday night. The Phoenix improves its record to 9-5-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the Horizon League, snapping a two-game losing skid in the process.
Green Bay controlled possession and momentum from start to finish before totaling 15 shots on goal and a few others that hit the goalpost. The Phoenix outshot UIC (2-14-0, 0-6-0 HL) 15-2 and took seven corner kicks to the Flames’ one.
The lone goal of the game came in the 10th minute, when centerback Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.) put home her first goal of the season after she found the ball at her feet following the corner kick from Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.). Eigenberger was credited with the assist on the goal and it would be the only score the Phoenix would need to move its record to .500 in league play.
For the second straight game the Phoenix registered 15 shots on goal, which ties its season high. In the last two games alone, Green Bay has put 30 shots on goal, a number that ties the entire total from the previous five games combined before Detroit and UIC.
Valparaiso 1, Milwaukee 0
The Valparaiso women’s soccer team matched a program record with their eighth straight victory and extended its unbeaten streak to 14 matches as the Crusaders downed Milwaukee Wednesday evening at Brown Field, 1-0. The win over the Panthers was the first in program history for Valpo and keeps the Crusaders atop the Horizon League table.
With their eighth straight win, the Crusaders matched the mark of the 2006 squad, which also captured eight consecutive victories on their way to a 12-win campaign. Valpo’s unbeaten streak now has spanned a full two months, as its last loss came on August 22 in the season opener against Belmont.
Perhaps most important is the fact that Valpo stayed perfect in Horizon League play with the win. The Crusaders are now 6-0-0 with two games to go in the league slate, keeping their pace three points ahead of Detroit, which won on Wednesday as well. Valpo has secured a top-two seed for the Horizon League Championship, and with a win on Saturday against the Titans would clinch the outright regular season crown, while a draw would secure a share of the title.
It took the Crusaders less than 16 minutes to find the game’s lone goal, and as it has so often recently, it came off the foot of sophomore April Cronin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). Cronin intercepted a Panther pass across the back line in the middle of the field, leaving her one-on-one with Milwaukee goalie Paige Lincicum in the box. The sophomore calmly beat Lincicum to the near side from ten yards out for the eventual match-winner. For Cronin, it is her sixth goal in the last eight games, while the sophomore also leads the league in league-only play with four goals.
From there, it was just a matter of the Crusaders keeping the Panthers off the board, and other than an early second-half opportunity where a potential Milwaukee goal was waved off due to a foul, Valpo did just that. The Crusader defense surrendered just three shot attempts to the Panthers, none of which were on goal as Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]) didn’t need to make a save in earning her ninth clean sheet of the season. Valpo ended the match with ten shots, three of which were on goal as Lincicum made two saves.
“I felt like in the first half, we were able to utilize the width of the field to our advantage,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich. “I thought our whole group did a nice job connecting and getting the ball out wide. We knew with Milwaukee fighting to be in the tournament, they would come out in the second half and try to create a goal any way possible. We had to be very good at clearances, seeing and defending their attackers, so we made the decision to not go out and press too much for a second goal and were able to withstand their pressure. Our players stepped up and found a way to get the win tonight, which was huge, and just continued to do what we do.”
Youngstown State 2, Cleveland State 1
Senior Brittany Tenis scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:29 left in regulation to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Wednesday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
Following a corner kick by Katie Hohmann and a scrum in the middle of the box, Tenis attempted a shot that was blocked. On the rebound, the senior from Flint, Mich., found an opening through a pack of both teammates and defenders and slid the game-winning goal into the lower-left corner of the net.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 7-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State falls to 8-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
The Penguins also finish unbeaten at Farmers National Bank Field with a home record of 6-0-2.
Tenis also became the first player to score two goals in a match since Rachel Morrison scored twice against Canisius in 2012.
Over the first 37 minutes, the match was marred with 10 combined fouls and just seven total shots before YSU's Kathy Baquero was fouled in penalty box.
Tenis, who had scored earlier this season on a penalty kick, was called upon for the attempt and beat CSU goalkeeper Sarah Wood for a 1-0 lead at the 37:22 mark of the match.
At the 63:32 mark, Cleveland State's Allie Sieradzki knotted the match at 1-1 off a rebound from a Jackie Podolsky, who had eight saves, save after a shot by the Vikings' Amanda Sivic.
With those eight saves, senior Jackie Podolsky moves into seventh place on the YSU all-time saves chart with 168.
