Men's Golf Notes

Butler

NO MATTER THE WEATHER: Freshman Kevin Sasena garnered Athlete of the Week honors for leading Butler to a third-place finish at the Butler Spring Invitational on March 20. Sasena fired an even-par 72 despite heavy winds and cold on his way to an individual runner-up finish.

 

WHEN THERE'S A WILL: Senior Will Turner opened Butler's spring schedule with solid rounds of 75 and 76 in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 13-14. Turner, who led the Bulldogs to a ninth-place finish, captured a share of 18th place as an individual in the tournament.

 

Cleveland State

THREE VIKINGS FIRE SUB-80 ROUNDS: Junior Ben Grandy highlighted a team-leading three-round score of 238 with rounds of 77 and 79, respectively at the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Ocala, Fla. Sophomore Doug Barber fired a first-round 78, while freshman Jake Scott also dipped below 80 with a second-round score of 79.

 

VIKINGS SCORE IN BUNCHES: All four Vikings who finished last week's El Diablo Intercollegiate posted scores within three strokes of each other. Grandy's 238 was followed closely by Scott at 240 and senior Steve Weir and Barber at 241.

 

Detroit

TITANS TAKE THIRD IN FLORIDA: Detroit opened the spring portion of its schedule with a third-place finish at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic. The Titans, who finished just one stroke out of second place, were tops among three Horizon League teams in the tournament field.

 

MURPHY'S LAW: Junior Kyler Murphy captured the season's first Athlete of the Week award after tying for medalist honors at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic. Murphy's consecutive rounds of 72 helped the Titans finish third in the 11-team event.

 

Loyola

LINQUIST OFF TO SOLID START: Loyola junior Frank Lindquist fired a 149 (75-74) at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic, then tied teammate Armando Favela for 10th-place honors at the Geico Direct Spring Invitational on March 12. In five rounds, Lindquist has shot no higher than 77.

 

TWO FRESHMEN NOT FAR BEHIND: Freshmen Sean Bidzinski and Kevin Emmerich both fired two sub-80 rounds at the Geico Direct Spring Invitational.

           

UW-Green Bay

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Three freshmen and two sophomores look to figure heavily in UW-Green Bay's plans.  The Phoenix was led in each of its fall season tournaments by an underclassman.  There are just two seniors on the 11-man roster.

 

GOING GOBIS: Sophomore Peter Gobis led the Phoenix in its first two fall tournaments.  In those tournaments, he shot three rounds of 72 or better.

 

Wright State

KNUTSON OFF TO A HOT START IN FLORIDA: Junior Brandon Knutson fired rounds of 78 and 76, respectively, to lead the Raiders in the first two rounds of the Marshall El Diablo Intercollegiate. Knutson ended up tying sophomore Tyler Miskell in 65th-place overall with a three-round score of 239.      

 

RAIDERS FINISH NINTH IN GEORGIA: The Raiders captured a ninth-place finish at the Geico Direct Spring Inviational in Savannah, Ga. Junior Brandon Knutson led the Raiders with a 230 for the tournament. Knutson fired a team-best 74 in the second round.

 

Youngstown State

PENGUIN TRIO DIPS BELOW 75: Freshman Ryan Stocke captured a share of 21st-place with a two-round score of 151 at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic on March 10. Senior Nate Komsa and junior Jim Powers also fired sub-75 rounds. Komsa's round 73 and Powers' 75 both came in the tournament's second round.

 

OFF TO A HOT START: Stocke fired a 71 at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic. Stocke's mark ties for the League's best this spring.

 

 

Women's Golf Notes

Butler

FAB FIVE: Butler placed all five of its players among the top 16 individuals en route to a second-place finish at the North South Intercollegiate.  Junior Sarah Swanson led the Bulldogs with back-to-back rounds of 78, finishing seventh overall. Sophomore Niki Garden also captured a Top 10 finish with a score of 178.

 

PAR FIVES NO SWEAT FOR SWANSON: Junior Sarah Swanson also tied for third in par-5 scoring at the North South Intercollegiate. Swanson fired a one-under par score while also recording four birdies.

 

Cleveland State

85 AND BELOW: A quartet of Vikings shot rounds of 85 or lower last week at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. Senior Kristen Obush and freshman Ashley Davidson led the Vikings with one round of 82 each, while junior Lexi Retzer finished with rounds of 85 and 84, respectively. Sophomore Amanda Gladfelter also registered an 85 on the first 18 holes.

 

TOP 10 FINISH FOR GLATFELTER: Sophomore Amanda Glatfelter posted a nine-over 81 at the Butler Spring Invitational. The ninth-place finish was Glatfelter's second career top-10 finish.

 

Detroit

TITANS ROWDY IN TEXAS: The Titans continued their spring schedule at the UT-San Antonio Rowdy Round-Up last week, finishing in eighth place. Sophomores Mandy Dupuis and Ashley Hamilton both shot rounds of 80 or better.

 

SHE CAN `DU' IT: Dupuis, who garnered Athlete of the Week honors last week, has led the Titans in five straight tournaments. Her 54-hole total of 245 included a blazing first-round score of 78.

 

Loyola

`SINNEN' IN THE RAIN: Junior Rachael Sinnen placed seventh individually at the weather-shortened Butler Sping Invitational. Her 80 led the Ramblers to a fourth-place finish.

 

RAMBLING THROUGH THE COMPETITION: All five Ramblers who played in the Butler Spring Invitational finished in the Top 20. Dating back to the fall season, the Ramblers have now finished fourth or better as a team in each of their last five tournaments.

 

Youngstown State

THREE FOR THREE: Sophomore Adrianna DiLonardo has led the Penguins in all three of their meets this spring. Her three-round total of 249 at the Marshall El Diablo Intercollegiate was good for 38th place overall.

 

PENGUINS CONSISTENT ALL WEEK: After 90 holes of golf during their season-opening trip to Florida last week, the Penguins posted team rounds between 330-340. The season-best 330 came during the second round of the Northern Illinois Snowbird Intercollegiate.
