INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC freshman Luis Gonzaga and Detroit sophomore Amanda Cornwell have been name Horizon League Tennis Players of the Week for the period of Jan. 11-17.

Gonzaga, a native of Sorocaba, Brazil, went 1-1 in both singles and doubles play last week. He posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles in UIC's season-opener at DePaul. Gonzaga also teamed with Scott Shepardson to register a 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 3 doubles on Saturday.

Cornwell, a native of Waterford, Mich., earned a victory in her only singles and doubles matches of the week. She recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles in Detroit's season-opener against Eastern Michigan. Cornwell also paired with Carolina Salas Espinosa to notch an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles on Sunday.

The Detroit women return to action on Saturday at Western Michigan. The UIC men are idle until Jan. 29 when they travel the University of Chicago.
