It was the perfect day for a soccer game. The sun was shining, the air...crisp, and very little wind. It was an even more perfect match-up...two teams who were battling for top spots in the Horizon League—WSU and Butler.
Last week we played 5 games in a week and it was nice to have Friday off to prepare for such an important game. Butler had played Detroit a couple days earlier and won, 3-1. It was also Senior Day at Wright State, so we honored our three seniors, Megan Bush, Kristi Brendlinger and Nicole Amador before the match. I wish all three of them best of luck, as they've made a very strong impact on WSU soccer.
As the whistle blew, right from the get go, it was a war on the field. It seemed more like a wrestling match than a soccer game with emotions running high. Play seemed pretty even in the first period with Butler having possession for the majority of the half. They had a breakaway with 15 seconds remaining, but their shot went just wide of the goal, keeping the game scoreless.
The second period proved to be just as entertaining. With only 16 minutes left in the game, a mix-up in the box put Butler up 1-0 to seal our fate. It's heartbreaking to lose on our home field, on a memorable day like Senior Day, but quite frankly Butler just came in with more fight. Right from the start, they gave us little room to breathe or move, and forced us into playing their game.
Our next league game is against Green Bay on Friday. We just have to move forward and learn from weaknesses.
