Green Bay 88, Cleveland State 51
Green Bay had six different players score in double figures as the balanced Phoenix attack got past Cleveland State, 88-51, on Thursday night at the Kress Center.

Sarah Eichler (14), Brionna Barnett (13), Lydia Bauer (12), Jenny Gilbertson (12), Adrian Ritchie (12) and Breannah Ranger (11) all reached double figures as the Phoenix shot 54.2 percent from the field.

Barnett, who had only scored 11 points in her freshman campaign coming into Thursday night, set a career-high with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. She was 3-of-4 from three-point range setting career-highs in makes and attempts and also set career-highs in rebounds (6) and steals (3) in the contest.

Gilbertson and Ranger joined Barnett in scoring in double figures off the bench. The trio combined to shoot 12-of-15 from the field as Green Bay’s bench outscored Cleveland State’s bench, 37-0.

Eichler was 7-of-11 from the field and passed out six assists to lead Green Bay. Fellow senior, Ritchie, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and also had a game-high four steals.

Cleveland State’s Preseason First-Team All-League member, Shalonda Winton scored 21 points to lead all scorers and also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Cori Coleman chipped in 17 points as they were the only two Vikings to reach double figures. Coleman and Winton combined to shoot 13-of-34 (38.2%) as CSU as a team could never get on track offensively, shooting just 31.5% for the game.  Green Bay scored the first seven points of the game, but Cleveland State responded with a 15-8 run to tie the game at 15 nearly eight minutes into the contest. The game would remain close for the next five minutes with Green Bay holding just a one point lead, 25-24, after a CSU layup with 8:03 remaining until halftime. The Vikings though would not score again in the half as the Phoenix closed the opening 20 minutes on a 12-0 run to take a 37-24 lead into halftime.

GB would score the first four points of the second half to extend its lead to 17. Cleveland State finally broke its drought on a Winton layup with 15:19 remaining in the game – 12:44 since its last field goal – but that was as close as the Vikings would get to Green Bay in the second half.

Youngstown State 58, Milwaukee 56
Heidi Schlegel connected on five of her six free throw attempts in the final 25 seconds of the game as Youngstown State outlasted Milwaukee, 58-56, on Thursday night inside UWM’s Klotsche Center.

Schlegel, who entered the game shooting 84.2% from the foul line to rank second in the conference, made two free throws with :25 remaining to give YSU a 55-52 lead. After a charging foul on Milwaukee, Schlegel made two more to give the Penguins a 57-52 lead with :15 left. Kimee Chandler made a layup with :8 remaining to cut YSU’s lead to one possession, but Schlegel was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made her first free throw attempt to put the game away.

Schlegel finished the game with 15 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Brandi Brown also scored 15 points for the Penguins and also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds prior to fouling out with 2:27 remaining in the game.

The game was tight throughout the first half with Milwaukee leading most of the way. The Panthers though could never build a lead bigger than six, eventually settling for a 27-24 advantage over the Penguins at halftime.

Milwaukee stayed in front in the opening minutes of the second half and had a four point lead, 37-33, with over seven minutes gone in the half when Youngstown State grabbed control of the contest.

The Penguins went on a 14-3 run over a six-minute span to take the biggest lead either team would have in the game at 47-40. Monica Touvelle got the run started with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one and then Brown and Karen Flagg finished the streak, combining to score the next 11 YSU points.

YSU still had a seven point lead, 52-45, with 4:08 remaining when the Panthers made one last run. Avyanna Young and Angela Rodriguez made field goals on back-to-back possessions to cut YSU’s lead to three at 52-49. After a Brandi Brown free throw gave the Penguins a four point lead, Rodriguez made a three-pointer to cut the lead to one with :44 remaining. UWM fouled Flagg on the ensuing possession, but after Flagg missed her free throw, Touvelle grabbed the offensive rebound and YSU would get Schlegel to the line for their next six free throw attempts.

Emily Decorah led UWM with a career-high 20 points. The junior guard connected on 6-of-9 three-pointers as she made three in each half, but she was only the Panther that could get things going from long distance in the game as her teammates combined to shoot 2-of-15 from three-point range. Sami Tucker joined Decorah in double figures with 11 points and also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
