INDIANAPOLIS – Horizon League tennis champions Green Bay and UIC found out their NCAA Tennis Tournament destinations on Monday night. Men’s champions Green Bay will head to Malibu, Calif., to take on No. 7 national seed Pepperdine, while the 16-time women’s champions UIC drew No. 15 Michigan in the opening round.

The Waves went 23-6 and won the West Coast Conference Tournament by defeating No. 25 San Diego 4-1 in Saturday’s championship match.

The Phoenix earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by their first conference tennis title in school history on Sunday. No. 2 Green Bay defeated fourth-seeded Cleveland State 4-1 on Sunday, ending the Vikings’ run of four straight conference championships.

Fourth-year head coach Mark Thomas and Green Bay registered a school-record 19 wins in 2012, going 19-6 overall 6-1 in the Horizon League. The Phoenix had a League-best three All-Horizon League selections, as senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and freshman Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) were named to the first team and junior Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) picked up second team honors.

Green Bay will play on Friday, May 11, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.

UIC (18-3) claimed its 16th consecutive Horizon League women’s tennis championship on Sunday, knocking off Cleveland State, 4-0. The Flames have won 143 consecutive matches against Horizon League foes.

The Flames will be led into their match with Michigan by No. 1 singles player Mariya Kovaleva, who wrapped up her career with a 37-0 mark in conference play. Kovaleva is the first female in Horizon League history to capture four Player of the Year honors in her career.

Michigan tied for the Big Ten regular season championship with Northwestern, against whom UIC played at the start of the spring. The Wolverines fell in the tournament championship to Purdue.

UIC and Michigan will play on Friday, May 11, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
