INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee won in stunning fashion to open the Panther Invitational, while Green Bay and Wright State each collected victories on Friday night.
Milwaukee 3, IUPUI 2
A week after suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the final horn, Milwaukee turned the tables on visiting IUPUI, scoring with one second remaining to take a 3-2 win in the opener of the 38th Panther Invitational.
Milwaukee (2-1-0) got the game-winner from Pol Narbona, who collected a rebound and potted the ball as time expired. Robbie Boyd started the play by sending a long ball to Aaron Horvat, whose initial shot was turned aside before Narbona saved the day.
The Panthers held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 over the Jaguars, with Laurie Bell and Horvat each collecting a goal and an assist in the win. Bell gave the Panthers their first lead of the night on a penalty kick of his own.
Tied, 1-1, at intermission, Milwaukee retook the lead on Horvath's first career goal. Bell picked off an IUPUI pass in the attacking third and sent the ball to Horvat down the right wing. He took a few quick touches and sent the shot to the far post, banging in off the frame at the 52:31 mark.
IUPUI would not go quietly, finding the equalizer for the second time in a penalty kick situation in the 64th minute after a handball in the box was called on UWM. Keeper John Shakon made the save, but the rebound went right back to Kyle Hyland who netted it at the 63:47 mark.
Green Bay 2, Northern Illinois 1 (2OT)
After 100 minutes of play, it took just two minutes into the second overtime for Green Bay to find the game-winning goal, as Alonso Flores sent the Phoenix to a 2-1 victory over Northern Illinois at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Green Bay’s (2-1-0) Whitney Browne served a ball to Kirby Allen, who was drifting to the back post. Flores changed his route to head in the ball just outside the six-yard box to net the golden goal.
Allen put the Phoenix ahead in the second half, when Cheenuj Shong fed him the ball on the left side. NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey stepped up into the box to defend and Allen's shot rolled right into the right side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, NIU's James Stevenson passed ahead to Gael Rivera who found the back of the net from the right side of the box, knotting the game 1-1.
Max Nimmo collected his first career win for the Phoenix, stepping in for the injured Ryan Wehking, who left the match in the second half.
Wright State 3, Davidson 1
Battling back from an early deficit, Wright State collected its first win of the season, rolling past Davidson, 3-1, to open the Wolstein Classic on the campus of Ohio State University.
Wright State (1-2-0) would fall behind, 1-0, just over 13 minutes into the match, but quickly rallied for the equalizing goal. Brett Elder netted his first collegiate goal, beating the goalkeeper on a low shot to the right. Derek Zuniga recorded the assist.
Five minutes later, it was Zuniga putting the Raiders ahead for good, taking a pass from Albert Nilsson and finding the back of the net.
Continuing the pattern of players tallying an assist and a goal, Nilsson rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the year at the 23:59 mark, with the assists coming from Elder and Zuniga.
Davidson outshot WSU 16-10, but Raider goalkeeper Jacob Bye collected eight saves in picking up the win.
Drake 3, Loyola 1
Loyola men's soccer suffered a 3-1 loss to Drake on Friday night as the Ramblers rued missed opportunities.
Loyola (0-2-0) had five shots on goal to Drake’s four, but could not find the back of the net until the match was largely decided.
One of the Ramblers top chances came in the 14th minute, where a corner kick by Ryan Howe set up an Eric Shoendorf shot, only to see Drake keeper Rich Gallagher notch the save. Off a quick turn-around, the Bulldogs took the lead four minutes later off a header delivered by Nick Marshall
At the return of the game, Howe opened the second half for Loyola with a shot just wide of the post, developing momentum on offense. The opportunities were there for the Ramblers, but missed chances became a common recurrence throughout much of the night. A goal by Logan North in the 73rd minute extended the Bulldogs lead 2-0. Just ten minutes later Drake scored again, this time with Addison Eck serving the ball in from the top of the box.
Andrew Raymonds finally put a goal on the board for Loyola, tapping the ball in from an assist by Brian Lunar with only one minute left in the game.
UC Riverside 2, Detroit 1
The University of California Riverside scored late in the second half to defeat Detroit, 2-1, in the teams’ opener of the UC Irvine Invitational.
Pat Lepera scored an equalizing goal for Detroit (1-2-0) in the first half, but UC Riverside found the game-winner with just under five minute remaining in regulation.
UCR opened the scoring in the 34th minute, but the Titans came right back, with Matt Ybarra playing a deep cross to Lepera, whose two-hopper knotted the match just 42 seconds after the first goal.
Riverside scored with less than five minutes left, as Ivan Garcia collected a blocked shot and beat Nathan Steinwascher. Steinwascher made seven saves on the night.
Oakland 1, Cleveland State 0 (OT)
Two penalty kicks proved too many for Cleveland State to overcome, as the Vikings dropped their opening match of the Michigan/Oakland Tournament to the Grizzlies, 1-0.
In a foul-filled match, Cleveland State (1-1-0) was whistled for 20 fouls and handed five yellow cards.
Two of those led to Oakland penalties, with Brad Stuver stopping the first in the 50th minute. However, Johnny Dreshaj was able to beat Stuver in overtime, winning the match.
Marquette 1, UIC 0
Visiting UIC went toe-to-toe with Marquette, but like Milwaukee and Green Bay the previous week, came up just short in a 1-0 loss to the Golden Eagles.
UIC (1-2-0) outshot Marquette, 12-7, and put five shots on goal compared to Marquette’s two. However, Eric Pothast’s header in the 40th minute was all the Golden Eagles needed to knock off the Flames.
