NASSAU, Bahamas– Juniors Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) and Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) combined for 39 points and Green Bay opened its foreign tour with an 81-69 victory over the Bahamas All-Stars on Monday night. Mays added 10 rebounds and threw down three dunks in the victory.
The Phoenix fell behind 6-2 early before Mays scored six-straight points to give the Phoenix the lead for good. Green Bay also used first-quarter dunks from sophomore Josh Humphrey (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Kenneth Lowe (Chicago, Ill.) to lead 18-14 after one.
By early in the second quarter, all 10 Phoenix players in uniform had scored. Sykes took over, scoring 13 points in a six-minute stretch as the Phoenix extended its lead to 46-30 at the break. An All-Horizon League performer in 2012-13, Sykes totaled a team-high 20 points. Seniors Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) and Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) both missed the game due to injury.
Mays had eight points in the opening half on a pair of dunks and two jumpers, but the 6-foot-9 junior turned it up in the second half. Mays knocked down 7-of-10 free throws and finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow junior Alfonzo McKinnie (Chicago, Ill.) was limited to just 13 minutes because of foul trouble, but the transfer finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Sophomore Carrington Love (Milwaukee, Wis.) started and was the fourth Phoenix player in double figures, scoring 13 points.
Humphrey, playing his first game since 2011-12 after missing last season with a knee injury, grabbed 10 rebounds as the Phoenix held a 52-36 edge on the glass. Lowe and sophomore Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.) each added seven boards. Sykes had four of the team’s 12 steals.
Including McKinnie and Lowe (4 points, 7 rebounds), five Phoenix newcomers saw the floor. Tevin Findlay (Toronto, Ontario), Vince Garrett (Chicago, Ill.) and Turner Botz (Little Chute, Wis.) had four points, four points and two points, respectively.
Green Bay will be back on the court on Tuesday night, playing the Cybots at 7 p.m. ET.
