Green Bay to Face No. 13 Notre Dame in NCAA Tournament

The Horizon League regular season and tournament champion Green Bay men’s tennis team (18-7) is headed to take on No. 13 Notre Dame (19-9) in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Phoenix and the Fighting Irish will square off on Saturday, May 10 at 12 p.m. CT at the Courtney Tennis Center in Notre Dame, Ind.

Green Bay learned its NCAA Tournament destination by watching the NCAA.com Selection Show on Tuesday afternoon in the Special Events Room at the Kress Events Center.

“It’s an exciting time for this team and for the program being back in the NCAA Tournament,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “It represents a lot of hard work through the fall and spring seasons. We’re excited for the opportunity to play against a great team in Notre Dame, and we’re going to prepare to try and pull out an upset.”

Making its second NCAA trip in the last three seasons, the Phoenix earned an automatic bid to the 64-team field by winning the Horizon League tournament title in Ann Arbor, Mich., over the weekend. Top-seeded Green Bay had a bye into Saturday’s semifinals, where it defeated No. 4 Valparaiso 4-0 before picking up a thrilling 4-3 victory against No. 2 Cleveland State on Sunday.

Green Bay earned its first NCAA berth in the 2012 season, when it traveled to Malibu, Calif., to face No. 7 Pepperdine (L, 4-0).

Notre Dame was the No. 4 seed in its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Championship last weekend, defeating Clemson in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 1 seed and defending national champion Virginia in the semifinals. The Irish will be a familiar opponent for the Phoenix, as multiple players from the two teams competed against each other in fall tournament action.

Joining Green Bay at Notre Dame’s regional site will be Northwestern (21-10) and Ole Miss (15-13).
