GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After starting its 2010-11 season with a 7-0 record, the Green Bay women’s basketball team has cracked the Associated Press Top 25 National Poll at No. 23. The ranking is the earliest the Phoenix has been in the AP Top 25 Poll in program history.
November 23 was the earliest Green Bay appeared in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 23. Since then, the Phoenix jumped two spots to No. 21 in the most recent poll released Nov. 30.
Prior to Monday’s poll, the earliest the Phoenix has ever been ranked in the AP Poll was Dec. 14, 2009 when it was No. 23. The AP Top 25 Poll is released on Monday while the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll is released on Tuesdays.
This is the fourth time in seven seasons Green Bay has been ranked in the national polls and second consecutive under fourth-year head coach Matt Bollant.
Last season the Phoenix saw its highest ranking (14) in the ESPN/USA Today Poll on Jan. 19, 2010. Green Bay’s highest national ranking in the AP Top 25 Poll was 16 on Jan. 13, 2003.
In games played through Dec. 5, Green Bay is the national leader in turnover margin forcing opponents to turn the ball over 11.4 times per contest. 333 teams are ranked in the statistic. In addition, the Phoenix is one of 15 teams in the country without a loss at this point in the season.
No. 23/21 Green Bay is in the midst of one of its toughest non-conference schedules in program history. The Phoenix will host Southeast Missouri (3-5) at 7 p.m. on Friday before facing Marquette (7-1) Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
