INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay junior Craig Cox (Surrey, England) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Milwaukee junior Maddy Soule (New Braunfels, Texas) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of Jan. 23-29.
In Green Bay’s first weekend of play, Cox was undefeated as the Phoenix went 1-1, falling to Western Michigan, 5-2, before sweeping IPFW, 7-0. Playing at No. 5 singles, Cox rallied for a win on Jan. 27, dropping his first set, 7-6, in a tie-break, before rallying to knot the match with a 6-2 win. In the super tie-break, the 2011 Second Team All-League honoree cruised, winning 10-3. The next day, the junior rolled past his opponent from IPFW, 6-0, 6-2, improving to 2-0.
In doubles play, Cox and teammate Erik Finkenbrink won both of their matches at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles, respectively. The duo won by a break against Western Michigan, 9-7, before winning 8-7 (5) at No. 1 on Saturday versus IPFW.
Soule, who was the 2011 Newcomer of the Year in the Horizon League, is collecting her second career League Athlete of the Week accolade. The junior went 2-0 at No. 1 singles for Milwaukee (3-1) and was unbeaten at No. 1 doubles, helping the Panthers go unbeaten on the week.
In a 6-1 victory against Chicago State, Soule breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 before knocking off Bradley’s Sarah Rodefeld, 6-0, 7-6 (3) the following day. In doubles, the duo of Soule and Christina Colarossi dropped just two games, winning at No. 1, 8-2, against Chicago State before winning at love versus Bradley in an eventual 7-0 victory.
Milwaukee will be off until Feb. 9, but Green Bay will host three matches this weekend, beginning with Michigan Tech on Friday, Feb. 3 for a 7 p.m. ET match. The Phoenix will meet Bradley the following day before hosting Carleton on Saturday, Feb. 5.
