GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay's return to the postseason after more than a decade ended in tough fashion Wednesday night at the Resch Center, as the Phoenix (22-11) dropped a 76-72 game to Vermont (24-8) in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.

The contest featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes. The Catamounts took the lead for good with one minute remaining on a tip-in by Marqus Blakely, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds, that made the score 71-70 in favor of the visitors. A 3-pointer with 13 ticks left by Mike Trimboli, who added 17, gave Vermont a four-point lead that the Phoenix was unable to overcome.

Vermont was busy on the glass, turning 12 offensive rebounds into a 16-4 edge in second-chance points. In addition, the Phoenix bench was outscored 31-9.

The Catamounts had a 42-34 advantage at halftime, but Green Bay chipped away at the lead and went on top with 13:48 left on a conventional three-point play by Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.).

Green Bay's Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) garnered his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high-tying 10 assists. Cotton led the Phoenix with 17 points.

It was the final game for three Phoenix seniors: Mike Schachtner (Somerset, Wis.), Ryan Tillema (Randolph, Wis.) and Terry Evans (St. Louis, Mo.). Schachtner (14 points), Tillema (8) and Evans (6) all finished with more than 1,000 career points.

Green Bay's 22 victories on the year were the most by the team since the 1995-96 team won 25. The loss was just the second home defeat for the Phoenix all year (13-2).
