Visiting Green Bay built a big first half lead and never looked back in defeating Wright State at the Nutter Center 70-48 on Monday night. The Phoenix improved to 16-2, 6-0 in the Horizon League, while the Raiders fall to 9-10 and 3-3 in the Horizon League.
Green Bay’s defense, which entered the night second in the country in points allowed at 47.2 per game, suffocated the Wright State offensive attack in the first half. The Raiders were just 2-of-26 (7.7%) from the field in the opening 20 minutes and didn’t make their first field goal until 5:34 remained in the half.
After Adrian Ritchie opened the game’s scoring with a three-pointer, the Phoenix went to work in the paint as they scored 26 of their first half points down low.
Green Bay led 6-2 2:30 into the game and then went on a 31-6 run as Wright State missed its first 17 field goal attempts of the game. By the time Ivory James made the Raiders first field goal of the game it only cut Green Bay’s lead to 25 points.
While WSU’s offense struggled, Green Bay’s did not as the Phoenix shot 54.3% from the field in the first half to take a 49-14 lead into the break. The Phoenix also outrebounded the Raiders 29-12 in the opening half.
Wright State played much better in the second half, shooting 46.2% from the field, as they outscored the Phoenix by 13 in the final 20 minutes, but the Raiders first half deficit proved too much to overcome.
Breannah Ranger came off the bench to lead four Green Bay players in double figures. The junior forward was 6-of-10 from the field to finish with 14 points and also tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds. Adrian Ritchie and Stephanie Sension both finished with 13 points. Ritchie led the team with five assists. Lydia Bauer was the final Phoenix player in double figures with 11 points and she tied with Ranger for the team-lead in rebounds with eight.
James led the Raiders with 14 points as she was the only Wright State player to reach double figures. Wright State’s leading scorer Kim Demmings finished with six points as the Phoenix defense was able to limit the offensive production of the Horizon League’s Preseason Player of the Year in both meetings between the two teams this season.
