INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay’s sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) is the Horizon League men’s tennis Player of the Week, while Cleveland State’s freshman Victoria Bensimon (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) is the Horizon League women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 16 – Sept. 22.

After being named MVP of the Western Michigan Invitational, Howard Scott took the court a week later to lead the Phoenix at the Purdue Fall Invitational. Scott had a successful weekend, advancing to the finals of the Flight A singles bracket.

Over the course of the three-day meet, Scott won his first three singles matches beginning the tournament with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win over DePaul’s Filip Dzanko. He then advanced to the semifinals and tallied two more straight-set wins over Valparaiso’s Dave Bacalla and Louisville’s No. 2 seed Chris Simich. Scott also recorded a 3-1 doubles record, advancing to the Flight B semifinals with teammate Marius Merz.

The Green Bay men’s tennis team resumes action at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Bensimon led the way for Cleveland State at the Ball State Fall Invitational in both singles and doubles play. She advanced to the doubles A bracket with teammate Princess Gbadamosi, compiling a 3-1 record.

Bensimon and Gbadamosi defeated duos from Butler 8-6, Illinois State 8-7 (4) and Ball State 8-6 before falling to Arkansas State 8-2 in the finals. Bensimon also competed in the singles C bracket, collecting victories against Arkansas State’s Jess Heeps-Eriksen (6-4, 6-0) and Bobbi Modesto of IUPUI (6-3, 6-4).

Cleveland State’s women’s tennis team travels to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Invitational starting Friday, Sept. 27.

Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:

Dave Bacalla, Vaparaiso (Fr.) – Defeated Wright State’s Haydin Joblin 6-1, 6-1 at the Purdue Invitational and carries a 4-1 singles record.
Jorg van der Vloet, Cleveland State (Jr.) – Finished runner-up in the B doubles bracket at the Purdue Invitational with Matt Ford and finished as the runner-up in the C consolation singles bracket. He went 4-1 in doubles and 3-2 in singles over the weekend.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:

Elene Strakhova, Detroit (Sr.) – Won the No. 3 doubles flight with teammate Raina Halabi and was the only UDM member in the singles flight to earn a victory in the opening round, finishing fourth.
Ashley Straub, Milwaukee (Fr.) – Placed fifth in her flight in singles and 10th in her flight in doubles with teammate Hayley Marshall.
