Green Bay's Keifer Sykes earns the Lou Henson award national player of the week honors.
Sykes led Green Bay to double-digit wins over Wright State, Milwaukee and Youngstown State last week. The defending Horizon League Player of the Year scored 86 points on the week, averaging 28.7 points on 53.6 percent shooting from the field (30-56) and 50 percent from long range (9-18). He has added five rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest.
Sykes started the week by scoring 23 of his then-season-high 28 points in the second half of Green Bay’s 79-55 win over Wright State. At one point in the second half, he scored 16 of Green Bay’s 21 points as the Phoenix turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 24-point win.
After scoring 23 points in the second half versus Wright State, Sykes opened the game at Milwaukee on Friday by scoring 22 as the Phoenix leapt out to a 20-point halftime advantage. The senior guard finished the game with a career-high tying 34 points, making 13-of-20 shots on the night, including 5-of-7 from long range.
He closed the week with 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals in Green Bay’s 82-67 win over Youngstown State.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball.
The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
