INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) is the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Valparaiso freshman Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind.) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 10-16.
Green Bay’s men’s tennis squad competed in two dual matches this past week against Toledo and DePaul at home at the Western Racquet and Tennis Center. The Phoenix swept Toledo, 7-0, on Friday night winning five of the six singles matches in straight-sets. On Sunday morning, the team posted its 28th-straight home victory with a 5-2 win over DePaul. The Blue Demons swept the three doubles matches but Green Bay bounced-back after the early 1-0 deficit to capture five of the six singles match victories.
Tenzer led the Phoenix in both matches playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with teammate Howard Scott. In singles action facing Toledo’s Stiepan Sisko, the senior won in straight-sets 6-1, 6-3. In doubles play, the duo defeated Sisko and Omar Espinosa in a 7-5 match. His second straight-set victory of the week came on Sunday versus DePaul’s Sten Leusink, where Tenzer tabbed a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
The Valparaiso women’s team hosted Nebraska-Omaha on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday. The Crusaders posted a 4-3 win over the Mavericks after getting behind 1-0 early after losing the doubles point. The following day, the Jaguars edged out the Crusaders in a 4-3 match while Valparaiso picked up the doubles point as well as singles victories at No. 1 and No. 2.
Hebble was on top of her game over the two matches for the Crusaders, playing at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with fellow teammate Kaitlyn Hamel. Hebble notched a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 win against the Mavericks’ Molly Matricardi en route to the team’s first win of the season. Facing IUPUI’s Abbey Neff, Hebble snagged the No. 2 singles win 6-3, 6-1 after defeating the Jaguars’ Neff and Marina Schneiger in doubles play, 6-4.
