Green Bay's Tenzer, CSU's Janek Collect Tennis Athletes of the Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay freshman Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Cleveland State junior Nicole Janek (Clarkston, Mich.) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 13-19.

 

Tenzer went 4-0 in singles play last week, turning in a 3-0 mark in doubles as Green Bay (8-1) collected four victories. Janek matched the effort, going a flawless 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles, helping Cleveland State (5-3) pick up three wins last week.

 

Tenzer split time between No. 1 and No. 2 singles, rolling to a straight set 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to start the week and followed it up with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 as Green Bay knocked off IUPUI, 5-2, and Chicago State, 7-0, respectively. Against two nationally ranked Division II opponents, the University of Chicago and Wisconsin-Whitewater, Tenzer won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1.

 

In wins over Ball State (5-2), Toledo (4-3) and Case Western (7-0), Janek anchored the No. 5 singles slot, dropping just one set over the three matches. In Friday’s victory over the Cardinals, Janek breezed to a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win. The junior followed it up by rallying for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win against Toledo, helping clinch the match for the Vikings. In her second match of the day, Janek did not drop a game in winning at love.

 

Tenzer teamed with Felix Goepper at No. 2 doubles to go 3-0, while Janek and Nicole Sherwood formed a formidable duo, collecting a 3-0 record.

 

After playing four matches in three days, Green Bay will have just one this week, traveling to Chicago to take on DePaul. The Phoenix and Blue Demons will begin their match on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. ET. Cleveland State will have a doubleheader on Saturday, hosting Bowling Green at 12 p.m. ET before meeting Oakland at 4 p.m.
