Cleveland State University sophomore Steve Grove (men's swimming) and Butler University senior Genni Gardner (women's cross country) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 30).

Grove helped CSU to a 132-102 victory over Green Bay on Saturday (Oct. 27) as he won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.69. He also captured the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.93, giving CSU 18 points for Grove's efforts. In addition, Grove contributed to the 400 medley relay team which won the event in 3:29.77.

In the classroom, Grove maintains a 3.82 grade-point average while majoring in mechanical engineering.

Leading the Bulldogs to a sixth-straight Horizon League Cross Country Title, Gardner was runner-up at the championship meet last weekend. Running the 5K course in a time of 17:38, her effort earned her first-team All-League recognition for the second-straight year.

Carrying a 3.942 grade-point average, Gardner majors in communications disorders. She has received numerous awards, including the 2007 Tony Hinkle Scholarship for outstanding achivement in athletics and academics. She has also been named to the All-League academic team, the 2006 CoSIDA Academic All-District V team, and the Horizon League Honor Roll.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Kent Wories, Butler (cross country, senior, 3.965, finance) earned first team All-Horizon League recognition at the 2007 Horizon League Cross Country Championships. In the 8K race, he posted a time of 26:16 to finish fifth overall, as he helped Butler capture a tenth consecutive League championship in cross country.

Malcolm DeBaun, Loyola (soccer, sophomore, 3.96, biology) was a key member of a Rambler defense that tied Denver 1-1 on Saturday (Oct. 27), and has allowed just the one goal during the month of October. The victory clinched the regular-season title for Loyola, as the Ramblers have not lost since Sept. 26 to then-No. 3 Northwestern.

Chris Honig, Valparaiso (cross country, sophomore, 3.57, psychology/chemistry) earned Second-Team All-League honors at the Cross Country Championships this weekend. He finished in eighth-place, and helped the Crusaders to a fifth-place team finish.

OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:

Jennifer Wieand, Cleveland State (soccer, junior, 3.55, physical education) totaled three points over the weekend on a goal and an assist. She began the weekend by assisting on the Vikings first goal in the 2-2 draw with Detroit on Friday (Oct. 26), and came back Sunday (Oct. 28) to score her school-record eighth goal of the season in a 3-1 loss to Butler. Her three points extended her school-record scoring mark to eight goals and 19 points this season.

Cynthia Morote-Ariza, Loyola (soccer, sophomore, 3.40, clinical psychology) scored two goals in Loyola's 2-0 victory at Wright State on October 28, as the Ramblers locked up the No. 2 seed for the Horizon League Championship. She added to her single-season record of goals and now has 15 this fall to go with 38 total points. She only needs one more point to equal Loyola's career record for points (66).

Holly Nearman, Milwaukee (cross country, senior, 3.651, journalism and mass communications) led the Panthers to a second-place finish at the Horizon League Championship meet, which is its highest finish since joining the League. Placing fourth individually, Nearman repeated as an All-League first team honoree, and was Milwaukee's top finisher for her ninth-straight meet.

Laura Rolf, Valparaiso (cross country, junior, 3.40, new media-journalism) took first-place at the Horizon League Cross Country Championships last weekend, covering the 5K course in 17:33. Her time was six seconds ahead of the runner-up, and 40 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. She has been victorious in all five races she has run this season, and played a key role in helping Valpo to a fourth-place team finish in its first League championship event.
