INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University freshman Gordon Hayward has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 8-14. The selection marks Hayward's first career weekly honor from the League office.

A native of Brownsburg, Ind., Hayward averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists during a two-game stretch last week. The forward made 58 percent (15-for-26) from the field, including a sizzling 60 percent (12-for-20) from three-point range.

Butler (8-1 overall, 2-0 HL) continues to sit atop the Horizon League standings after splitting a pair of recent road games. The Bulldogs defeated Bradley on Wednesday (79-71) before suffering their first loss at #21/21 Ohio State on Saturday (54-51).

The setback at Ohio State snapped Butler's string of 10 straight regular-season wins over schools from the Bowl Championship Series conferences.

Hayward posted a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes after recording 20 points and six boards vs. the Braves.

Hayward leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (5.9 rpg), steals (1.6 spg), field goal percentage (.520), three-point percentage (.511) and threes made per game (2.6) through the season's first month.

Butler returns to the hardwood on Saturday when it hosts Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. ET.
