#HLSB: Cleveland State Sweeps Weekly Honors

INDIANAPOLIS –Cleveland State sophomore Alyson Broschk (Canton, Ohio) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while senior teammate Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 14-20. This is the first League accolade for Broschk and second for Shields this spring.

Cleveland State went 3-1 this past week facing conference-foes UIC and Green Bay. The Vikings defeated UIC 5-1 on Monday before their three-game series with Green Bay over the weekend. Cleveland State took the first game against the Phoenix 7-6 before falling in the second 13-3 in six innings. In the series finale, the Vikings won 2-1 to move the squad’s record to 21-14 overall and 5-4 in conference.

Broschk led Cleveland State at the plate throughout the week posting a .545 batting average while going 6-for-11 in four starts. The sophomore began the week with a 3-for-3 performance over UIC where she hit a home run and knocked in four runs in the win. While tallying a .583 on-base percentage and 1.273 slugging percentage, Broschk also hit two doubles, walked once and added three more RBI. The sophomore currently has an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 14-straight contests.

Shields had an impressive performance in the circle on Senior Day against Green Bay, collecting a 2-1 victory while throwing a complete game from the mound. The senior had an earned-run average of 1.00 and only gave up six hits during the contest. She held batters to a .207 batting-against average while striking out 11 batters. Shields improved to 6-1 on the season for the Vikings.

Cleveland State continues conference play after a mid-week doubleheader against Kent State on Tuesday, April 22 beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET. The Vikings then take on Oakland Friday afternoon for a doubleheader before beginning their three-game series versus Detroit on Saturday.
