Cleveland State and Green Bay Will Square Off in Championship

Cleveland State and Green Bay had no rust coming off of a first round bye to clinch spots in the title game on Sunday.

Cleveland State Downs Oakland in Dramatic Fashion

CLEVELAND- After having two five set matches in the quarterfinals, the Vikings and the Golden Grizzlies took their match all the way to the end as Cleveland State made the plays down the stretch to claim victory.

The match started out in the home team's favor with Cleveland State taking the first four points of the first set and never looking back winning 25-16. The second set came just as easy with the Vikings scoring seven straight points in the middle of the set to balloon an 10-8 lead into a 17-8 rout. The Vikings claimed the set 25-14.

Facing an 0-2 deficit, Oakland showed tremendous grit as they jumped out to a 10-3 advantage, and eventually took the set 25-22. The Golden Grizzlies slowed down the Vikings' powerful offense in the fourth and forced a final set.

The fifth set had six ties and two lead changes as neither team was willing to back down from the other. After the score was knotted up at 11, Cleveland State showed why they are the top team in the League as they took the last four points and won 15-11. Horizon League Player of the Year Grace Kauth played big for the Vikings as the senior recorded 19 kills and 15 digs. Gina Kilner notched 47 assists, and Shannon Grega was the team leader in digs with 17.

Melissa Deatsch registered a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs on the afternoon for the Golden Grizzlies. Sammy Condon did a little bit of everything with nine kills, two assists, six digs and five blocks, and Jordan Lentz tallied 43 assists, nine digs, four kills and two blocks. Oakland closed out their season with a 19-13 record.

Green Bay Takes Care of Business against Northern Kentucky

CLEVELAND- The Phoenix came off of a first round bye, and defeated the Norse in straight sets to clinch their spot in the Horizon League Championship.

The story of the match was Green Bay's front line, led by Lydia DeWeese, making it difficult for Northern Kentucky's fast paced offense to gain any rhythm. The Norse were held to a .173 hitting percentage for the match as the Phoenix won 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

In the winning effort, DeWeese had 10 blocks and six kills for the Phoenix. Megan Powers stuffed the stat sheet with 14 kills, six digs and five blocks. Maddie Yoss guided the Green Bay offense with 40 assists as the team had a .270 hitting percentage on the night.

Northern Kentucky had another strong performance from super-sophomore Haley Libs. The outside hitter registered a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs. Lauren Hurley and Taylor Snyder closed out their collegiate career with 14 digs for Hurley, and 35 assists for Snyder. The Norse closed the campaign with an 18-11 record.
