Senior Juwan Howard Jr. scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in overtime and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball led throughout the extra session as the Titans earned a 93-87 victory over visiting Youngstown State on Thursday night in historic Calihan Hall.
The win was also the second-straight in overtime against the Penguins as the Titans won last year 83-81 in the Motor City.
Freshman Paris Bass added 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the win for his third career double-double, while also collecting four assists and three blocks. Junior guard Anton Wilson added 17 points, including 14 in the second half, and a career-high seven assists.
Senior Brandan Kearney tallied 11 points and a career-best six assists, while freshman Jaleel Hogan was the fifth Titan in double figures with 10 points.
Detroit (11-12, 4-4 HL) had the lead for much of the game, but Youngstown State (10-14, 1-8 HL) came back to jump out in front, 60-57, with 7:12 left in the second half. Detroit stormed back to take a five-point advantage, 69-64, at the 2:45 mark, but YSU ended the stanza with five-straight points to send the game into overtime.
Howard Jr. then dominated the extra frame starting the period with a triple. He would score the first seven points in overtime for the Titans, as they never let the Penguins take the lead. His last bucket put Detroit ahead, 79-74, and the red, white and blue sealed the victory connecting on 14-of-16 free throws in the last 2:43.
UDM ended the game shooting 42.3 percent (30-of-71) and 76.5 percent (26-of-34) at the free throw line, recording 22 assists on its' 30 field goals. The Titans outrebounded the Penguins, 44-37, and forced 18 turnovers turning those into 20 points. Detroit also had a 16-5 advantage in second-chance points.
The Titans looked like they were going to race Youngstown State out of the gym early on as they hit seven of their first 13 shots en route to opening a 16-4 lead a little more than eight minutes into the contest. The defense was just as impressive holding Youngstown State to just 2-of-9 shooting with eight turnovers.
Detroit still led by 12, 18-6, when the Penguins caught fire going on a 12-3 run to trim the Titan lead to three, 21-18, with 5:57 left. The Titans recovered, though, topping that spurt with a 13-4 charge to end the half, regaining a 12-point lead at the break, 34-22. The defense was the catalyst again as YSU was just 2-of-9 shooting with two more turnovers.
UDM opened as large as a 14-point lead, 40-26, early in the second half, but the pesky Penguins would not go away and finally tying it at 53-53 with 9:43 left. Youngstown State would then take the lead by two, 55-53, as two free throws capped a 7-1 run and the Penguins eventually pushed their advantage to as many as three, twice, 58-55 and at 60-57 with 7:12 remaining.
Sophomore Marcus Keene led five Penguins scoring in double figures with a game-high 24 points and tied a career high with six 3-pointers, four coming after halftime. Vaughn scored all of his points after halfime, while Hain posted 10 of his 12 after the break.
Milwaukee 71, UIC 65
Matt Tiby posted 19 points and 13 rebounds and Steve McWhorter added 17 points to lead host University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (8-14, 3-5 Horizon) to a 71-65 victory over UIC (5-17, 1-6 Horizon) tonight at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. The win is Milwaukee’s third in a row at home and is the Panthers’ 13th in the last 15 meetings versus the Flames.
“It’s always a grind at this time of the season and UIC gave us problems with their guard penetration and decision making,” Milwaukee Head Coach Rob Jeter. “What’s good to see is 16 assists and only nine turnovers and we were able to make some shots from both inside and outside. When we make shots we have a chance to be in and win games.”
Tiby scored six of Milwaukee’s first eight points as the Panthers jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. Jake Wiegand’s three-point play helped spark a 12-2 UIC run that turned a four-point deficit into an 18-12 lead with 7:55 left in the first half. But the Panthers answered with a 9-2 run of their own, capped by a three from Cody Wichmann, to grab a 21-20 lead and the teams would go into the break knotted up at 28.
UIC quickly built a six-point lead early in the second half before the Panthers put together a 10-3 run that was capped by Justin Jordan’s three-pointer, for a 44-43 lead.
Another three by Wichmann, his third of the night, broke a 50-50 tie and gave Milwaukee the lead for good, and Akeem Springs (13 points, 8 rebounds) followed with a pair of free throws to give the Panthers a 55-50 advantage.
Milwaukee led by as many as seven points on a couple of occasions in the second half, the last coming when Tiby drained a pair of free throws with 1:46 remaining to give the Panthers a 67-60 lead. UIC wouldn’t go down without a fight though, and a three from Ahman Fells and a pair of foul shots from Paris Burns sliced the UWM lead to 67-65 with 51 seconds left.
But, Jordan hit the biggest shot of the night, draining a three from the left corner with 20 seconds left, to extend the lead to 70-65 and Milwaukee held on to for its third win in the last five outings.
The Panthers drained 52.2 percent (12-for-23) of their shots in the second half, including 5 of 10 from three-point territory. Tiby’s 19 points and 13 boards fell one shy of his season high in each category and the double-double was his sixth of the season. The Panthers are now 9-3 in his career when he tallies 10 or more points and rebounds and he has scored in double digits in a career-best 13 straight games.
McWhorter added five rebounds and four assists to go with his 17 points, while Springs (13 points) and Wichmann (11 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
Fells scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to lead UIC.
