INDIANAPOLIS -- The Horizon League has announced the hiring of Julie Purcell to its staff as the assistant director of student-athlete and legal affairs. She will begin her duties with the League on Aug. 13.

Purcell, a native of Louisville, Ky., earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Northwestern University in 2007 and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 2011.

Purcell interned with the Big Ten in its compliance department from August of 2007 to August of 2008, then interned in the athletics compliance department at the University of Louisville from January of 2009 through May of 2011.

At the Horizon League, Purcell will assist in compliance, championships administration and legal matters.

“We are delighted to add someone with Julie’s qualifications to our staff,” said Commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone. “Her background as an outstanding student-athlete,  knowledge of compliance issues, legal training and passion for being involved in intercollegiate athletics administration separated Julie from a field of very qualified candidates.”

“I'm thrilled to be joining the Horizon League and look forward to being part of the tradition of excellence that characterizes the student-athlete experience in the League,” said Purcell.

Purcell is familiar with the Horizon League, as her sister, Laura, is currently a sophomore volleyball student-athlete at Loyola.
