Indianapolis - The Horizon League announced its Spring Academic All-League teams today, honoring 80 student-athletes for their work during the 2003-2004 academic year.
Twenty-two athletes return to the 2004 Spring All-Horizon League Team from last year, while six athletes are three-time selections. In all, 80 student-athletes were selected: baseball (12), softball (12), men's golf (7), women's golf (7), men's tennis (4), women's tennis (6), men's outdoor track and field (15) and women's outdoor track and field (17).
Butler led the League with 19 academic honorees. Youngstown State (14), Detroit (11) and Loyola (10) also landed double-digit selections followed by UW-Milwaukee (9), Wright State (6), Cleveland State (5), UIC (4), and UW-Green Bay (2).
The Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.25 or better on a 4.00 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a League-sponsored sport. The team is comprised of the same number of first team All-Horizon League student-athletes in each sport. Ties are not broken.
BASEBALL
Tim Poley of Detroit and Ben Stanczyk of UW-Milwaukee both return from the 2003 All-Academic baseball team, while Jim Lipinski of Youngstown State was a 2002 selection.
In addition, Poley, Stanczyk and Butler's Andy Bulla all captured All-Horizon League honors this season. Stanczyk was the first player in the Horizon League to ever recieve both Player and Pitcher of the Year honors.
SOFTBALL
The softball team features four two-time Academic All-Horizon League selections in Detroit's Anna Ollgaard, UIC's Cameron Astiazaran, Loyola's Allison Scanlin and Wright State's Amy Price.
Earlier this spring, Astiazaran and Scanlin all landed spots on the All-Horizon League team along with Butler's Melissa Benter, Cleveland State's Grace Luginbuhl, UIC's Joyce Cathey, Loyola's Lindsey LaChiana and Becky Marx, UW-Green Bay's Michelle Kaminski and Kelly Murphy of Youngstown State. LaChiana was also named co-Pitcher of the Year.
MEN'S GOLF
Colin Christie of Butler returns to the All-Academic team for the third consecutive year as Loyola's Dan Mattingly returns from 2003. Christie was named the 2004 Horizon League Golfer of the Year while Detroit's Jesse Maytham also earned All-Horizon League accolades this past season.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Loyola's Nicole Puch and Lynsey Parlier return to the All-Academic team from 2003 along with Youngstown State's Gina Abruzzino and Lori Hatcher. The team also features five members of the All-Horizon League team, including Puch, Abruzzino, Hatcher, Butler's Wendy Jo Kramer and Cleveland State's Kristen Obush. Abruzzino and Obush also shared co-Player of the Year honors.
MEN'S TENNIS
Cleveland State placed Eric Winn and Paul Haley on the All-Academic team while UIC's Pat Zufan and Wright State's Kevin Teufel rounded out the squad. Winn and Teufel also earned spots on the 2004 All Horizon League team.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Butler's Christina Laun highlights the 2004 women's tennis team as she is returning for the third consecutive year. Laun also earned first-team All-Horizon League honors last spring.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The men's outdoor track and field team includes three three-time selections and one two-time honoree. Butler's Brad Bennett and UW-Milwaukee's Adam Hobler and Nick Davis return for a third consecutive season, while Butler's Brian Dunn returns from 2003.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Loyola's Kristyne McGuinn highlights the women's outdoor track and field team with her third consecutive appearance. The team also features four other returning members from 2003 and two other members returning from 2002.
