INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 531 student-athletes on Wednesday (Jan. 24) as members of the 2006 Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Butler University led the list with 83 student-athletes honored, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 77 and Youngstown State University with 64. Loyola University Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay each had 61 representatives, with Cleveland State University adding 55. The University of Detroit Mercy boasted 49, with Wright State University adding 47 honorees and the University of Illinois at Chicago contingent featuring 34 student-athletes.

A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 82 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along with 68 in women's soccer and 50 from women's swimming and diving. On the men's side, men's track and field/cross country (49) and men's soccer (37) featured the most honorees, followed by baseball (31).

Butler's women's track and field/cross country team led the way with a circuit-high 17 student-athletes recognized for their academic efforts. Loyola's women's soccer team won the League title on the field this fall and also excelled in the classroom with 15 players honored. UW-Milwaukee had 13 women's soccer players cited.

The Academic Honor Roll includes six competitors who earned Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) during the Fall, 2006, season. Detroit's Mary Parker and UW-Green Bay's Stephanie Gross each received First-Team recognition in women's soccer, with UW-Milwaukee's Ginny Graczyk on the Second Team. Paul Mongillo of Butler and Billy Meier of UW-Milwaukee were both Second-Team picks in men's soccer, with Cheryl Hegemann of UW-Milwaukee on the Third-Team unit in volleyball.

Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) as of Dec. 31, 2006.

Comprised of nine public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championship sports and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.
