INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 624 student-athletes on Thursday (Jan. 24) as members of the 2007 Fall Academic Honor Roll.
League newcomer Valparaiso University led the list with 87 student-athletes honored, followed by Youngstown State University (82) and Butler University (78). Loyola University Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee each had 64 representatives, with Cleveland State University adding 58. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay boasted 57 honorees, with Wright State University adding 52 honorees and the University of Detroit Mercy featuring 50. The University of Illinois at Chicago contingent included 32 student-athletes.
A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 95 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along with 69 in women's soccer and 62 from men's track and field/cross country. Other top sports included softball (54), women's swimming and diving (53) and volleyball (51).
Butler's women's track and field/cross country team led the way with a circuit-high 16 student-athletes recognized for their academic efforts. Loyola's women's soccer team won the League title on the field this fall and also excelled in the classroom with 14 players earning distinction in the classroom. Women's track and field teams from Youngstown State (15 honorees) and Milwaukee (13) were also among the other top programs academically.
The Academic Honor Roll includes three competitors who earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) during the Fall, 2007, season plus two Academic All-America honorees from last winter. Loyola's Markian Zyga earned Second-Team recognition in men's soccer, with Valparaiso's Jackie Thomas and Wright State's Tara Geegan on the Third Team in women's soccer and volleyball, respectively. A.J. Graves of Butler was a First-Team pick in men's basketball last February, with Green Bay's Mike Schachtner on the Third Team.
Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) as of Dec. 31, 2007.
