In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 632 student-athletes on Thursday (July 24) as members of the 2008 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll.


Youngstown State University led the list with 84 student-athletes honored, followed closely by Valparaiso University (82) and Butler University (79). The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had 70 representatives and Loyola University Chicago had 65, with Cleveland State University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay adding 58 apiece. Wright State University featured 54 honorees, the University of Detroit Mercy had 50, and the University of Illinois at Chicago had 32.


A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 99 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along, with 68 in women's soccer and 62 from men's track and field/cross country. Other top sports included softball (55), volleyball (54) and women's swimming and diving (53).


Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) as of June 20, 2008.
