INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 681 student-athletes on Monday (July 20) as members of the 2009 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Valparaiso University led the list with 94 student-athletes, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 81 representatives, Youngstown State University and Loyola University Chicago with 76 each and Butler University with 74. Cleveland State University had 65, with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay adding 63. The University of Detroit Mercy featured 57 honorees, Wright State University had 56 and the University of Illinois at Chicago 39.

A sport-by-sport breakdown features 96 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along with 76 in women's soccer and 75 from men's track and field/cross country. Other top sports include men's soccer with 67, women's swimming and diving with 55, baseball with 47 and softball with 46.

Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) as of June 20, 2009.
