INDIANAPOLIS — In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 730 student-athletes on Tuesday (July 27) as members of the 2010 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Butler led the list with 116 student-athletes honored, followed by Milwaukee (96) and Loyola (86).  Youngstown State had 77 representatives and Valparaiso had 68, with Green Bay, Wright State and Cleveland State boasting 64, 62 and 60, respectively.  Rounding out the field was Detroit with 57 honorees while UIC garners 44.

A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 91 student-athletes competing in women’s track and field/cross country along with 86 in women’s soccer and 74 from men’s track and field/cross country.  Other top sports include men’s soccer (73), women’s swimming and diving (59) and volleyball (55).

Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League’s 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).
