Horizon League Announces 2015 Women's Basketball Conference Schedule
INDIANAPOLIS -- The race for the 2015 Horizon League women’s basketball title will begin on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 as the League announced its conference women’s basketball schedule on Thursday. Each of the nine Horizon League teams will play the others twice - for a total of 16 conference games - over a nine-week span culminating on March 7.
League play will open on Wednesday, Jan. 7 with two games. Milwaukee opens the season at Detroit, while the other game will be a rematch of last season’s tournament championship game with Wright State hosting Green Bay. Last season, the Phoenix won both regular season contests – a two-point win at home and a seven-point win in overtime at WSU – but the Raiders won the championship game as they outscored Green Bay 52-27 in the second half to win their first Horizon League Championship, 88-69.
The team’s second meeting of the regular season will be in Green Bay on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Four First-Team All-League performers return from last season, including Player of the Year, Kim Demmings from Wright State. Also back from the first-team are UIC’s Ruvanna Campbell, Cleveland State’s Imani Gordon, Youngstown State’s Heidi Schlegel.
Some rivalry games of note include, Cleveland State at Youngstown State (Jan. 15; with the return game at CSU on Mar. 4), Milwaukee at Green Bay (Jan. 17; the return game at Milwaukee on Feb. 14) and Oakland at Detroit (Jan. 22; with the return game at Oakland on Feb. 18).
The 2015 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Tournament featuring all nine teams will open on Monday, Mar. 9 with one first round game. On Wednesday, the remaining eight teams will play in the quarterfinals with the top-four seeds hosting a game. The two semifinal games will be played on Friday at the site of the highest remaining seed and the championship game is scheduled for Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPNU.
