INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 514 student-athletes on Tuesday (Jan. 24) as members of the 2005 Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Butler University led the list with 78 student-athletes honored, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 69. Three schools---the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wright State University and Youngstown State University---each had 58 representatives, while the University of Detroit Mercy placed 53 student-athletes on the list. Loyola University Chicago added 52 honorees, with Cleveland State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago boasting 44 apiece.

A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 75 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along with 60 in women's soccer and 53 from women's swimming and diving plus 47 in softball. On the men's side, men's track and field/cross country (52) and men's soccer (36) featured the most honorees, followed by men's swimming and diving (31).

The Academic Honor Roll includes eight competitors who have earned Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the past 12 months. Butler's Victoria Mitchell was a Second-Team Academic All-America choice in women's track/cross country last spring, with teammate Monica Behney on the Third-Team list.

Youngstown State's Abby Ettenhofer (Second-Team) and Cleveland State's Jenna Maddocks (Third-Team) represented the League on the volleyball Academic All-America rolls, with four men's soccer players drawing recognition from CoSIDA. UW-Green Bay's Adam Ben-Zikri was a Second-Team choice for the second year in a row, joining Butler's Patrick Reilly and UW-Milwaukee's Neil Dombrowski on that group with UWM's Steve Bode on the Third-Team unit.

Candidates for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.00 scale) as of Dec. 31, 2005.
