INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 505 student-athletes Friday (June 30) as members of the 2006 Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Butler University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee led the list with 67 honorees apiece, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with 60 and Youngstown State University with 58. Loyola University Chicago and Wright State University each placed 53 student-athletes on the list---followed closely by the University of Detroit Mercy (52)---while the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cleveland State University boasted 49 and 46 representatives, respectively.

A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 70 student-athletes competing in women's track and field/cross country along with 56 in women's soccer and 54 from women's swimming and diving plus 48 in softball. On the men's side, track and field/cross country (47) and soccer (34) featured the most honorees, followed by swimming and diving (30).

The Academic Honor Roll features 11 student-athletes who earned Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this year. Youngstown State and Cleveland State each boasted three Academic All-America performers. Jarrod Davis (men's track and field, First-Team), Brandon Caipen (baseball, Second-Team), and Abby Ettenhofer (volleyball, Second-Team) represented YSU, while Cleveland State's group included Grace Luginbuhl (softball, First-Team), J.J. Thornberry (softball, Third-Team) and Jenna Maddocks (volleyball, Third-Team).

UW-Milwaukee's Neil Dombrowski (Second-Team) and Steve Bode (Third-Team) were two of the four Horizon League representatives on the men's soccer Academic All-America units, along with Second-Teamers Adam Ben-Zikri of UW-Green Bay and Patrick Reilly of Butler. UIC's Sara O'Mara was the League's final Academic All-America selection, winning Second-Team honors in women's track and field.

Members for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.00 scale).

Comprised of nine public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championship sports and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.
