INDIANAPOLIS -- In recognition of success in the classroom by its participants, the Horizon League honored 532 student-athletes Friday (June 29) as members of the 2007 Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Butler University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee led the list with 78 honorees apiece, while Loyola University Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay each had 64 representatives and Youngstown State University boasted 62. Cleveland State University placed 56 student-athletes on the list, followed by Wright State University (49), the University of Detroit Mercy (48) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (35).

A sport-by-sport breakdown includes 76 student-athletes competing in women's cross country/track and field along with 66 in women's soccer and 53 from women's swimming and diving plus 40 in volleyball. On the men's side, cross country/track and field (46) and soccer (37) feature the most honorees, followed by baseball (32) and swimming and diving (29).

The Academic Honor Roll includes nine student-athletes who earned Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this year. Milwaukee boasted three Academic All-America performers in Billy Meier (men's soccer, Second Team), Ginny Graczyk (women's soccer, Second Team) and Cheryl Hegemann (volleyball, Third Team), with Butler, Detroit and Green Bay each having two student-athletes honored.

A.J. Graves (men's basketball, First Team) and Paul Mongillo (men's soccer, Second-Team) represented Butler on the Academic All-America rolls, with Detroit's Mary Parker (women's soccer) and Kaleigh Rafter (softball) each earning First-Team recognition. Stephanie Gross (women's soccer, First Team) and Mike Schachtner (men's basketball, Third Team) comprised the Green Bay contingent in that elite group.

Members for the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).

Comprised of nine public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championship sports and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.
