Detroit freshmen Chris Smalley and Ja'Quan Patterson, senior Jennifer DeFauw, and sophomore Susan Kalkstein have been named Horizon League Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the period of Dec. 14-20.

Smalley, a native of Gladwin, Mich., receives the men's track honor after taking third in the 600-meter (1:24.43) on Friday at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich. Smalley was the highest finisher for the Titans.

Patterson, a native of Ypsilanti, Mich., picks up the men's field award after placing ninth in the long jump (6.49 meters) on Friday. Patterson's mark was good for 11th in school history.

DeFauw, a native of Harper Woods, Mich., garners the women's track honor after placing fourth in the 600-meter (1:39.41) on Friday. She also helped the 4x400 meter relay to a fourth-place finish (4:07.84).

Kalkstein, a native of New Kensington, Pa., collects the women's field award after winning the triple jump (10.74 meters) and placing fourth in the long jump (4.98 meters). Kalkstein was also part of the fourth-place 4x400-meter relay team.

The Detroit men are back in action on Jan. 15 at the Notre Dame Opener in South Bend, Ind., while the Titan women return to the track on Jan. 16 at the Bowling Green State Challenge in Bowling Green, Ohio.
