INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State University senior guard Kailey Klein has been named the Horizon League's 2009-10 Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, according to a poll of head coaches, sports information directors and media members.

Klein received 258 points and 25 of 31 Player-of-the-Year votes. She was among the Horizon League's leaders in scoring (2nd, 16.9), free-throw percentage (3rd, .810), assists (T-6th, 3.1) and three-point accuracy (10th, .362) last season en route to being named Co-Player of the Year.

University of Illinois at Chicago senior guard Jessie Miller, Cleveland State junior guard Shawnita Garland, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay junior guard Celeste Hoewisch and Butler University senior forward Susan Lester join Klein on the Horizon League's preseason first team.

Miller (3rd, 13.0) and Garland (6th, 12.4) ranked among the 2008-09 League leaders in scoring, while Garland placed seventh in field-goal percentage (.517), Hoewisch occupied eighth in free-throw accuracy (.748) and Lester tied for eighth in rebounding (6.0).

Wright State University junior guard LaShawna Thomas, Valparaiso University senior forward Lauren Kenney, Green Bay junior forward Kayla Tetschlag, Butler junior guard Brittany Bowen and UIC sophomore guard Jasmine Bailey earn Horizon League preseason second-team accolades.

Thomas placed among the League's leaders in scoring (5th, 12.6), while Bailey (6th, 6.5) and Kenney (T-8th, 6.0) ranked in the top 10 for rebounding. Kenney also placed fifth in field-goal accuracy (.544) and ninth in free-throw percentage (.747), while Bowen ranked fourth in three-point shooting (.405).

Green Bay, which has claimed at least a share of the Horizon League's regular-season crown in each of the past 11 seasons, was picked to win another title in the League's 2009-10 preseason poll.

The Phoenix tied a Horizon League record with 29 victories a season ago and became the first League squad to go 18-0 in conference action.

Six Horizon League women's basketball teams open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13. The 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship is slated for March 8, 10, 12 and 14.
