Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships Day One

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Day One of the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships were highlighted by five record-breaking performances from Milwaukee's Shelby Schaal (pentathlon), Loyola's James McLachlan (long jump), and Butler's Callum Hawkins (5000m), Katie Clark (5000m) and its DMR team (11:35.83).

Shelby Schaal, a senior from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, posted the first event victory of the 2012 Horizon League Indoor Championships when she finished first in the women's pentathlon with a combined score of 3,756 points. The score is a new Horizon League record and beats the 3,700 point record UWM's Jenni Saarinen set in 2007.

The win put the Panther's out from early with 10 points. Schaal placed first in every event except the long jump and had a school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.60.

"My goal is just to hit each event hard and take it one at a time and I did just that," Schaal said. "Hurdles went really well. I was sub-nine (8.98) and in high jump, which I've been struggling in lately, I went out and jumped 1.61m (5-3.25). It just kept rolling from there. I had a seasonal personal best in the shot (34-2; 10.41m) and long [jump] was a little weak but I have open long later today so I'm gonna bring it hard.

"I finished with the 800m and I knew I needed to go sub-2:20 for the school record and I got out to a good start. I've been practicing really hard and I pulled it off this weekend."

At the end of the first day, Milwaukee was leading the women's team standings with 55 points. UIC (39), Loyola (30), Butler (25), Youngstown State (21), Valparaiso (10), Detroit (3) and Wright State (3) rounded out the competition. Loyola was leading the men's rankings with 39 points. Rounding out the men's side was Youngstown State (34), Butler (24), Milwaukee (20), Detroit (17), UIC (16) and Valparaiso (5).

In addition to Schaal having a record-setting performance, distance runners Katie Clark (Butler) and Samantha Hamilton (YSU) broke the 5000-meter record set at last year's indoor championships by Milwaukee's Elise Sigg (16:49.68). Clark, a junior for the Bulldogs, shattered the record by running a 16:23.75 and Hamilton, who finished second at the cross country championships, ran a 16:40.23 to take second in the event.

Also in the running events, Butler's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team of Mara Olson, Kaitlyn Love, Maddie Cassidy and Kirsty Legg broke the 2005 Butler record of 11:49.13 by more than 13 seconds (11:35.83).

On the men's side, Butler freshman Callum Hawkins claimed the 5000-meter Horizon League title with a time of 14:15.55. The mark is also a new Horizon League Indoor record, over-taking Gary Blackman's 2004 record of 14:23.57.

James McLachlan, a sophomore from Loyola, broke the previous HL record of 7.49m held by Angelo Finnie of Detroit since 2003. His leap of 7.72m (24-10) smashed the previous record to earn the Ramblers 10 points.

In the men's heptathlon, Milwaukee took 1-2-3 with senior Ben Crogan leading the way. Through four events, Crogan was leading with 2,632 points. Drew Feuk and Dan Simon had 2,572 and 2,552 points respectively. Rounding out the top-five was Detroit's Taylor Hennrick (2,497) and YSU's Clay Febus (2,383).

There were also several Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) facility records, including Valpo's Julian Smith's 200-meter time of 21.79. Tom Curr and Craig Jordan of Butler had record times of 1:51.10 and 1:52.66, respectively. For the women, Wright State's Cassandra Lloyd had a time of 8.41 in the 60-meter hurdles and Milwaukee triple jumper Samia Taylor had a leap of 19-2.75 for the new facility record.

- Loyola's James McLachlan set the new HL long jump record with a leap of 24-10 (7.72m). The previous record was held by Angelo Finnie of Detroit since 2003 (24-7, 7.49m).

- Butler's female DMR team of Mara Olson, Kaitlyn Love, Maddie Cassidy and Kirsty Legg broke the 2005 Butler record of 11:49.13 by more than 13 seconds (11:35.83).
