KENT, Ohio - Milwaukee's men's and women's track and field teams are in first-place following day one competition at the 2008 Horizon League Track and Field Championships at the Kent State University Field House.

The UIC men's and Youngstown State women's teams are in second place heading into the final day.

Valparaiso senior thrower Steve Bartholomew and Youngstown State thrower Bethany Anderson highlighted day one competition as both individuals claimed the League's respective weight throw titles.

The two individuals also broke the championship records in the men's and women's weight throw events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Batholomew's toss of 20.67 meters (67 feet, 9.75 inches) surpassed the event standard previously held by YSU's Jarrod Davis (19.01 meters, 2006) by 1.66m. Anderson's heave of 19.47m (63-10.5) catapulted her past former Detroit thrower Andrea Karpala's mark of 18.11m (2005).

Anderson's first-place finish in the weight throw marks the third-consecutive year she has won the event.

Milwaukee sophomore Erin Havener also set a meet record in day one as she won the pole vault with a mark of 3.65m (11-11.75) surpassing her own championship standard set last season of 3.60m.

In long jump, UWM senior Adam Schleis won the men's event and defended his 2007 title with a leap of 6.66m (21-10.25), while on the women's side, YSU's Alisha Anthony also defended her 2007 title as she posted a performance of 5.72m (18-9.25).

Earlier in the day, Youngstown State senior Yandeh Joh claimed the women's pentathlon with a score of 3,319 points. Joh won the 60-meter hurdles (9.15), high jump (1.52; 4-11.75) and long jump (5.51; 18-1) en route to the League crown in the event.

UIC junior and 2007 men's champion Mike Savegnago (2,812 points) holds a slight edge over UWM senior Justin Bohler (2,692 points) in the heptathlon heading into the final day. Bohler captured the League's heptathlon crown in 2006. The heptathlon concludes with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.

Savegnago finished the day by defending his pole vault title from a year ago as he won the event with a performance of 4.88m (15-7).

In the distance events, Milwaukee junior Holly Nearman won the women's 5,000-meter run as she clocked a time of 17:24.46. On the men's side, Butler junior Andy Baker took home the League crown with a time of 15:06.07. Baker then finished the day by running the anchor leg of the men's first-place distance medley relay team (10:05.88).

The Bulldogs also finished first in the distance medley on the women's side, clocking a time of 12:16.18.
