With the start of preseason practice less than a month away, Horizon League men's basketball has many reasons to be proud of its recent success. Butler has received most of the national attention during the past two seasons, but the entire League has enjoyed a recent track record of success and, last year, experienced one of its best overall seasons in a decade.

Take a look for yourself:

  • The Horizon League was ranked 11th in conference RPI for the 2007-08 season, which was an improvement of one spot from the previous year and eight slots better than three years ago.

  • The #11 ranking also was the League's best since also being 11th in 2001 and one shy of its best ranking on record (10th in 1992 and 1998).

  • The League ranked ahead of such conferences as the Mid-American (12th), Colonial (13th), Sun Belt (14th) and West Coast (15th); the League was actually ranked 10th in the nation for a portion of the season before dropping just below Conference USA.

  • Four League teams were ranked in the top 100 in RPI, including Butler (16th), Cleveland State (65th), Wright State (86th) and Valparaiso (98th).

  • The League boasted three teams in national postseason tournaments - Butler (NCAA), Cleveland State (NIT) and Valparaiso (CBI) - for the first time since 2003.

  • Four teams won 20 or more games for the first time in the League's 29-year history - Butler (a League-record 30), Valparaiso (22), Cleveland State (21) and Wright State (21).

  • League teams have won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament four straight seasons and seven times in the last decade, including three Sweet Sixteen appearances in the past six years (Butler 2003 and 2007; Milwaukee 2005).

  • The League claims eight NCAA Tournament wins in that six-year span, which is more than such conferences as the Colonial (6), Mountain West (6), West Coast (6) and WAC (5) and just one shy of the nine by the Missouri Valley, despite receiving nearly half as many bids in that time (8 NCAA bids to the Valley's 14).

Congratulations to our coaches, staff and administrators for making Horizon League men's basketball the success it is today!
