INDIANAPOLIS - Butler senior Rob Mullett, Loyola senior Erik Hernandez, BU freshman Kirsty Legg, and Milwaukee senior Beth Zimmerman have been named Horizon League Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the period of April 19-25.
Mullett, a native of Brighton, U.K., receives the men's track honor after winning the 1,500 meter (3:42.21) on Saturday at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. He is now ranked 10th in the nation and first in the League with the clocking.
Hernandez, a native of West Chicago, Ill., picks up the men's field award after winning the hammer throw (49.62 meters) and shot put (17.06 meters) on Saturday at the Cougar Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
Legg, a native of Middlesborough, England, garners the women's track honor after taking first in the 1,500 meter (4:27.89). Her time was nearly five seconds faster then the competition.
Zimmerman, a native of Watertown, Wis., collects the women's field award after finishing second in the long jump (5.45 meters) on Friday at the Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa and eleventh in the triple jump (12.27 meters) on Saturday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to the third fastest finish in school history (46.74).
The 2010 Horizon League Track and Field Championships kick off this Friday at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. The three day event will wrap up on Sunday afternoon.
