The 2008 Horizon League Track & Field Championships proved to be exciting on both sides, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men and Youngstown State University women claimed the team titles at the YSU track and field facility on Friday.
The Milwaukee women's team and the Youngstown State men's team were runners-up in a tight race on both sides.
Individual awards were presented following the meet. For the men, Ernest Cleary of Detroit was the Newcomer of the Year in running events, while Jerrill Hall of Youngstown State was Newcomer of the Meet in field events. Outstanding Performers of the Meet were Tyler Bucholz of Milwaukee in the running events, who won both the 100 and 200-meter sprints, and Steve Bartholomew of Valparaiso, who was victorious in both the hammer and discus throwing events. The Men's Coach of the Year was Pete Corfeld of Milwaukee, as the Panthers won their fifth consecutive League championship.
On the women's side, Youngstown State's Breanne Romeo and Alisha Anthony were honored as Newcomers of the Meet in running and field events, respectfully. Anthony was the champion in the triple jump, while Romeo took the 400-meter run title. The Outstanding Performer of the Meet in Running Events was Butler senior Genni Gardner, who won both the 1,500 and the 5,000-meter runs. For the field events, Valparaiso's Emilie Marsicek was named Outstanding Performer of the Meet after winning both the shotput and discus. Youngstown State's Brian Gorby was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Penguins to the championship after coming in second to Milwaukee last year.
