Indianapolis, Ind. - In recognition of the honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Horizon League schools will hold a celebration in conjunction with six League basketball games played on Saturday, Jan. 15, and one game played on Monday, Jan. 17.

The event will be conducted with the intent of involving student-athletes with the community, as well as educating elementary school students on the accomplishments of Dr. King. Each hosting institution has chosen a local elementary school to implement a contest among sixth-graders involving essay, music or art to celebrate Martin Luther King Day.

Fifteen winners from each elementary school will be chosen and recognized prior to the tip-off of each game. The contest winners will receive three complimentary tickets to the game and will accompany student-athletes from each basketball team during pre-game introductions. Students will also be given a commemorative T-shirt from the Horizon League and a book entitled The Life and Words of Martin Luther King Jr. by Ira Peck.

"This celebration will honor Dr. King and his legacy, as well as educate our student-athletes and participating young people," said Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone. "The schedule of events helps us reach out and touch our partner communities."

The Horizon League has been working with member institutions as well as the local elementary schools to organize each event.

"The Black Coaches Association (BCA) is proud of the efforts the Horizon League is putting forth to honor Dr. King," said Floyd Keith, the Executive Director of the BCA. "This sends a great message to the youth of our country."
